Careers: Electronic engineers work across telecommunications, medical technology (MRI, X-rays, ECGs), integrated circuit design, bioengineering, military systems, transport technology (GPS, e-tags, railway signalling), security systems, banking, robotics, environmental management and more.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Physics. Careers: Industrial engineers design and manage production and service delivery systems. They optimise facility layout, manufacturing, inventory control, supply chain management, quality management, cost control, maintenance, information systems and human resources.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Physics. Careers: Chemical engineers work across petroleum, food processing, minerals, power generation, paper and pulp, water and effluent treatment, environmental engineering and air pollution control. Roles include research and development, plant design, process control, operations and management.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Physics. Careers: Mechanical and aeronautical engineers work with power-generating machines including vehicles, aircraft, engines, turbines, nuclear reactors and biomedical systems. Specialisations include product design and manufacturing, marine and naval architecture, biomedical engineering, air-conditioning, aerospace systems, vehicle engineering and energy management.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Bachelor of Science in Physics, Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying. Careers: Civil engineers design, build and maintain constructions such as tower blocks and skyscrapers, dams, canals and pipelines, roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, power stations, towers, waterworks and outfall installations. They are involved in financial modelling, feasibility studies and the management and rehabilitation of large asset portfolios.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Physics. Careers: Metallurgical engineers extract metals from ores and optimise metallic components and products. They work in minerals processing, extractive metallurgy, materials engineering, advanced manufacturing (including laser-assisted additive manufacturing and welding) and failure analysis.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Physics. Careers: Computer engineers work across computer systems, software engineering, networks, embedded software, electronics, automation, data security, e-commerce, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. They specialise in integrating hardware, software and communications to optimise system performance.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Physics. Careers: Mining engineers work in mine management, technical operations (ventilation, rock mechanics), financial evaluation and mine design, mining contracting (tunnelling, shaft sinking), mining research, equipment design and manufacture and mining administration at national, provincial and international levels.

Careers: Electrical engineers work in power generation, storage, transmission, distribution and renewable energy. They design and manage electrical installations for municipalities, buildings, factories, mines, rail transport, water pumping, electrical grids, telecommunications, energy management and smart lighting.

Admission to the five-year programme in the School of Engineering will be determined by the Grade 12 results.

Careers: The Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree programme enables graduates to register with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) as candidate architectural technologists. The qualification is the first step to future registration as a candidate senior architectural technologist or a candidate architect.

Suggested second-choice programme*: Bachelor of Science in Real Estate. Careers: After the three-year degree, graduates can enter construction site management or subcontracting field. With the honours programme, graduates register as candidate professional construction managers or project managers, with opportunities in property development, portfolio management, commercial marketing and corporate management positions.

Suggested second-choice programme*: Bachelor of Commerce in Investment Management. Careers: Graduates work in property investment, finance, facilities management and property management. With an honours degree, graduates can register as professional property valuers. Career opportunities span the entire property sector as entrepreneurs or employees in private, government or semi-government sectors.

Suggested second-choice programme*: Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and Bachelor of Science in Real Estate. Careers: Quantity surveyors provide financial and contractual services in the built environment. After the three-year degree and honours programme, graduates register as candidate professional quantity surveyors. Opportunities exist in private, government and semi-government sectors, as well as property, banking, insurance, mining and manufacturing industries.

Careers: Graduates become town and regional planners, development practitioners, urban managers and real estate analysts. They work as private consultants or with government, research agencies (CSIR, HSRC), NGOs, financial institutions and property development groups. Graduates can register as professional town and regional planners with the South African Council for Planners.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Information Science specialising in Publishing, Bachelor of Commerce specialising in Information Systems and Bachelor of Arts. If specialising in Information Systems is selected as a subject at the first-year level, an achievement level of 5 is required in Mathematics. Careers: Graduates become information and knowledge managers, information or e-commerce specialists, consultants on information products and systems, information brokers (infopreneurs) and system specialists who develop information systems.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Information Science, Bachelor of Arts specialising in Languages and Bachelor of Arts. Careers: Entry-level opportunities include assisting publishing house managers, commissioning editors and production or marketing managers. Roles encompass market research, copyright negotiations, copy-editing, proofreading, marketing and promotion and distribution.

Suggested second-choice programmes*: Bachelor of Information Science, Bachelor of Information Science specialising in Publishing, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology in Information and Knowledge Systems and Bachelor of Commerce specialising in Information Systems. Careers: Graduates become programmers, web designers, animation specialists, video editors and electronic artists. They work for content producers across paper publications, television, radio, phone technologies and the web, or as coders for programming companies, specialising in digital music, video programming, graphics, games or web development. ** Possible name change to: Bachelor of Information Science specialising in Interactive Technology.
