Wits APS requirements

Wits uses seven subjects in the APS total, including Life Orientation (LO is scored on a smaller scale). English must be Home Language or First Additional Language. Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy goes in subject 1; Mathematical Literacy follows the “other subjects” table (no +2 maths bonus). English and Mathematics each receive +2 bonus points for achievement levels of 60% and above, per the official Wits NSC table.

Wits APS Calculation Method

The University of the Witwatersrand uses a specific method to calculate your Admission Point Score (APS).

How Wits calculates APS (NSC)

Based on the Wits undergraduate admission guide: APS uses the best seven subjects including Life Orientation; faculty-specific subjects must be included. Percentage marks map to Wits APS points (90–100% = 8 for other subjects, stepping down to 40–49% = 3; below 40% = 0).

  • Subject 1: Mathematics uses the English/Mathematics column (+2 for 60%+). Mathematical Literacy uses the same percentage bands as other subjects without that +2.
  • Subject 2: Life Orientation uses its own smaller scale (max 4 points for 90–100%).
  • Subjects 3 & 4: Two languages; English Home or First Additional (subject codes 7 or 8 in this tool) uses the +2 column for 60%+.
  • Subjects 5–7: Three further NSC subjects (Further Studies subjects count where applicable per Wits).

This calculator is indicative. Confirm wording and cut-offs on Wits NSC admission requirements.
