University of Cape Town APS Calculator

Calculate your UCT Admission Point Score easily

Use this calculator to determine your APS for University of Cape Town applications. Enter your subject marks to see if you qualify.

Important Information

Select your faculty first. UCT’s NSC APS (out of 600) uses your percentage marks: English plus five other subjects (Life Orientation is shown but scores 0; marks below 40% count as 0). Enter six different subjects plus LO, matching how you would report them to UCT.

UCT APS Calculation Method

The University of Cape Town uses different calculation methods depending on your chosen faculty.

Commerce, Engineering, Humanities & Law

APS is the sum of percentage points for English, five other NSC subjects (excluding Life Orientation and AP subjects from the total), with marks below 40% counting as 0. Life Orientation is not included in the APS total.

FPS = APS

Health Sciences

Uses APS plus NBT scores for Academic Literacy, Quantitative Literacy, and Mathematics.

FPS = APS + NBT(AL) + NBT(QL) + NBT(MAT)

Science

APS is calculated as above (max 600). FPS adds a second count of your Mathematics percentage and of Physical Sciences when taken; if you did not take Physical Sciences, Information Technology or Life Sciences may be used instead for that extra component only where allowed for your intended major—confirm with the Science faculty.

FPS = APS + Mathematics% + (Physical Sciences or allowed substitute)%

How UCT counts NSC marks for APS

For NSC applicants, UCT uses each subject’s percentage as that subject’s contribution toward APS (not the 1–7 admission-point bands used at some other institutions).

  • Marks 40% and above count at face value; marks below 40% contribute 0.
  • Life Orientation and AP subjects are excluded from the APS sum.
  • APS is out of a maximum of 600 (six subjects at 100% each).

Technical Mathematics / Technical Sciences: UCT states that Technical Mathematics may not substitute for Mathematics, and Technical Science may not substitute for Physical Sciences, in the same way as the standard NSC subjects for certain calculations. This calculator applies Science FPS doubling only for Mathematics (NSC) and Physical Sciences, or—if Physical Sciences is absent—for Information Technology or Life Sciences as the doubled “second science” component (verify against your programme).
