Introduction
University applications in South Africa demand a lot from students. Between calculating APS scores, tracking bursary deadlines, and figuring out which programmes to apply for, the process is rarely straightforward. The latest update to the University Qualifications app addresses these challenges directly with a set of new features and a significantly improved interface. This post walks through everything that is new and how each addition is designed to make your university journey easier.
A Redesigned Interface Built for Clarity
The most immediate change users will notice is the visual overhaul. The entire app has been rebuilt with a cleaner, more modern design language. Screens load with skeleton placeholders instead of blank states, navigation feels more intentional, and the overall layout places the most important information front and centre. The goal was to reduce the time it takes for a student to find what they need, and the new design reflects that.
The APS Dashboard
One of the most requested additions is now live: a unified APS dashboard. Rather than checking your score against one university at a time, the dashboard calculates your APS across every supported institution simultaneously and ranks them by score. Universities that support instant calculation display your result immediately, while others are accessible for a deeper breakdown. Your NSC results are stored locally and synced to your profile when you are logged in, so the dashboard is always up to date without requiring you to re-enter your subjects each time.
Qualifying Programmes by APS Score
Finding out which specific programmes you qualify for has always been the core purpose of this app, and this update takes it further. The qualifying programmes screen now includes a live score filter, allowing you to slide your APS score up or down to explore programmes just within or slightly above your current range. This is particularly useful for students who are considering upgrading a subject or want to understand how a few extra marks could open up more options.
Support has been extended to additional universities, including CPUT, CUT, DUT, MUT, NMU, NWU, RDU, SMU, SPU, SU, TUT, UCT, UFH, UFS, UJ, UKZN, UL, UMP, UNIVEN, UP, UWC, UZ, VUT, WITS, and WSU.
Bursary and Application Deadline Tracking
A brand new section dedicated to deadlines and opportunities is now part of the app. Students can browse bursaries, scholarships, and application deadlines filtered by type and institution. Each listing includes the full details of the opportunity and a direct link to apply.
For logged-in users, the app goes a step further. You can subscribe to any deadline and opt into automated reminders at 30 days, 7 days, and 1 day before the closing date. Push notifications are sent directly to your device so you never miss a window. Your subscribed deadlines are collected in one place under My Subscriptions, giving you a personal tracker for everything you are following.
University Details and Programmes
The university section has been expanded with a dedicated details screen for each institution. From contact information to programme listings, everything is accessible in a structured layout without having to leave the app. Programme pages are linked directly from university profiles, making it easy to move from general research to specific course information.
User Accounts and Personalisation
The app now supports full user accounts with email and password authentication, email verification, and password reset. Creating an account allows your NSC results and deadline subscriptions to persist across devices. The profile section includes a preferences screen where you can manage push notification settings, with the app intelligently handling both device-level and account-level notification permissions.
What Is Coming Next
The roadmap includes expanded APS support for the remaining universities, richer bursary information, and deeper integration between your saved NSC results and the qualifying programmes engine. Updates will continue to be pushed regularly.
