NWU Extends 2027 Engineering Applications: Another Chance to Apply for BEng Programmes

Prospective engineering students have been given another opportunity to apply to North-West University (NWU) for the 2027 academic year.

NWU has announced that the application period for its Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programmes has been extended, giving applicants who missed the earlier application period additional time to submit their applications.

The extension is particularly important for Grade 12 learners and other prospective students who are planning to pursue a career in engineering but had not completed their NWU application before the original closing period.

Applicants interested in studying engineering at NWU are encouraged to apply as soon as possible rather than waiting for the extended application period to end.

Which Engineering Programmes Are Available at NWU?

NWU offers several Bachelor of Engineering programmes through its Faculty of Engineering.

For the 2027 academic year, prospective students can apply for BEng programmes in:

  • Chemical Engineering

  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering

  • Computer and Electronic Engineering

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Industrial Engineering

  • Mechatronic Engineering

The BEng programmes are offered at NWU's Potchefstroom Campus and normally take four years to complete.

NWU Engineering Requirements for 2027

Applicants should remember that an extended application opportunity does not mean that the academic admission requirements have changed.

According to NWU's published 2027 admission information, applicants for the Bachelor of Engineering programmes are expected to meet the following minimum requirements:

  • APS score of at least 34

  • Mathematics: 70% or higher

  • Physical Sciences: 70% or higher

  • English or Afrikaans: 60% or higher at Home Language or First Additional Language level

Applicants must also meet the University's general requirements for admission to degree studies.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not automatically guarantee admission. Engineering programmes have limited capacity, and NWU may select applicants based on their academic results and the number of spaces available.

What If Your Grade 11 Results Are Below the Requirements?

Learners whose Grade 11 marks are close to, but do not yet meet, the engineering requirements should not necessarily rule themselves out.

NWU indicates that applicants with borderline Grade 11 results may still apply and may be considered conditionally, provided that their final Grade 12 results meet the required Mathematics, Physical Sciences and language marks.

The university also recommends selecting a second study option outside the Faculty of Engineering to keep other study opportunities available.

NWU's Xcel Programme May Be Another Route Into Engineering

Students who do not meet the direct BEng requirements may also want to investigate NWU's Xcel preparation programme.

According to NWU, students with at least 40% in Mathematics, 40% in Physical Sciences and 60% in the applicable language of instruction may apply for the one-year Xcel programme.

The programme is intended as an alternative preparation route for students who want to pursue engineering but do not yet meet the standard entry requirements for the BEng programmes.

How to Apply for NWU Engineering for 2027

Applications must be completed through the official NWU online application system.

Before starting your application, make sure you have:

  • A valid personal email address

  • Your South African ID document or passport

  • Your latest academic results

  • Your final Grade 11 results or final Grade 12 results, depending on your current status

  • Supporting documents saved in PDF or JPEG format where required

Applicants should ensure that all information submitted is accurate and that the application has been fully submitted rather than simply saved as an incomplete application. NWU advises applicants to use one personal email address per applicant.

Apply through the official NWU website

Applicants can visit:

https://studies.nwu.ac.za/studies/apply

Because this is an extended opportunity, prospective engineering students should submit their applications as soon as possible.

Has NWU Announced the New Engineering Closing Date?

NWU's announcement confirms that the application deadline for 2027 BEng programmes has been extended.

However, at the time of writing, the university's main online application information still displays the previous undergraduate application dates and states that undergraduate applications are closed. The University's engineering selection information also continues to show 31 August as the standard engineering closing date.

Applicants should therefore not rely on an assumed closing date. Check the NWU application portal and official university communication for the latest deadline and submit your application as early as possible while the extended opportunity remains available.

Applying Does Not Guarantee Admission

An application is only the first step.

Engineering is a competitive field of study, and NWU has limited places available. Applicants who meet the minimum APS and subject requirements may still be subject to selection.

Your final Grade 12 results can therefore remain important even if you have already submitted an application.

Prospective students should continue working towards the strongest possible results in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and their language subjects while waiting for the outcome of their application.

Do Not Miss the Extended Opportunity

If studying engineering at North-West University is one of your goals for 2027 and you did not apply before the original application period ended, this extension may provide another opportunity to be considered.

Prepare your documents, review the requirements for your chosen BEng programme and submit your application through NWU's official online application platform as soon as possible.

Students should also regularly monitor their application status and official NWU communication for updates relating to their application.

Important: University admission requirements, programme availability and application dates may change. Always confirm the latest information directly with North-West University before making application decisions.
